Man, 57, dies after struck by car in horror road collision as ‘deepest sympathies’ paid to family after ‘awful tragedy’

A PEDESTRIAN has died after a horror road collision in Co Antrim.

Alan Doherty, 57, was struck by car on the Bridge Road in Dunloy in the early hours of Wednesday.

The incident happened shortly before 2.30am.

Mr Doherty, who was from the Dunloy area, died at the scene of the collision.

The Bridge Road was closed overnight but reopened later on Wednesday.

The PSNI said officers from the collision investigation unit were working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

A spokesperson said: “It was reported shortly before 2:30am, that a male pedestrian and a car had been involved in a collision.

“Sadly, the pedestrian, 57 year old Alan Doherty, from the Dunloy area, died at the scene from his injuries.

“The Bridge Road was closed overnight but has now reopened.

“Officers from the Collision Investigation Unit are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the collision, and would ask anyone who was in the area at the time, and witnessed what happened, or who may have captured mobile phone or dash-cam footage, to contact them on 101, quoting reference number 255 27/12/23.”

UUP councillor Darryl Wilson offered his sympathies to the family and friends of Mr Doherty.

Writing on social media, the politician said: “A life lost brings unimaginable grief at any time of year, and must be particularly difficult at a time of year when we come together with loved ones,”

“Can I offer my deepest sympathies to Alan’s family, friends and all impacted by this awful tragedy.”

‘Sad news’

Sinn Fein MLA Philip McGuigan also expressed his condolences following the death.

The North Antrim MLA said: “I want to extend my deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Alan Doherty.

“We all awoke in Dunloy this morning to hear the awfully sad news of Alan’s death.

“This is a tragedy which will be deeply felt within the local community who I know will now rally round Alan’s family at this difficult time.”
